With reference to my Confidential despatch
of the 10th July, I have the honour to report the further course of events in connection with the strike.

The internal situation is very much easier.
The markets are functioning more or less normally, the tea- houses, in which the bulk of the coolie population gets its meals, have re-opened, launch crews have returned, and work is being generally resumed. Large numbers of strikers, including most of the domestic servants, are still in Canton, where they are forcibly detained, though a few manage to return by way of Maceo. The frontier is strongly picketed on the Chinese side, and at least one person
has been shot in attempting to enter British territory. It is perhaps as well that the strikers cannot return in large numbers, as it will not be possible to find employment for many of them while the boycott on British
trade continues.
